As you may be aware, there have been several confirmed cases of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the GTA. With this information, it is imperative that we take the necessary precautions to help prevent further spread of this virus. The Southern Ontario Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE Southern Ontario) is committed to ensuring we provide a safe and healthy environment for our membership.

Prior to registering and attending any of our upcoming Lunch & Learn events, please ask yourself:

    1. Have you traveled to the following countries in the last month?

China, Hong Kong, Japan, Iran, Italy, Macau, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand.

    2. Have you been in close contact with any family members or close contacts who have traveled to the countries listed in the last month?

    3. Have you been in close contact with anyone with a suspected or confirmed case of Coronavirus (Covid-19)?

If you answer yes to ANY of these questions and have a fever, cough, or other respiratory symptoms, we ask that you do not attend our upcoming Lunch & Learn event.

We also ask that our membership use good judgement regarding hygiene when attending SFPE Southern Ontario events. Specifically, to help prevent the spread of viruses it is important that everyone wash their hands frequently with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds), use alcohol-based sanitizer when hand washing is unavailable, and cough and/or sneeze into a disposable tissue or your elbow/arm rather than your hands.

Thank you for your continued support and assistance in keeping our events a healthy environment for everyone. We will continue to monitor the ongoing situation and implement any additional precautions as they may come about. If you have any other questions about other precautionary steps you can take, please visit: www.cdc.gov.

Cheque PresentationThursday, May 30th was a terrific day in support of a great cause. SFPE-SOC members, their guests, and corporate sponsors came together to contribute to the Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Kid’s Burn Program. This year’s amount raised was $10,278.11, a new record for us. A cheque was delivered by SFPE-SOC golf committee members on August 21. The cumulative total for the past 4 years we have supported SickKids Burn Program is over $ 33,000. Our total for all charities raised for the past 22 years is over $ 104,000.

On that day we also got together for golf, food, friendship and to catch up on each other’s activities. The venue was The Cardinal Golf Club in New Market, Ontario, about 55 km (34 miles) north of Toronto. The mostly sunny day reached a temperature of 21 °C (70 °F). At registration each player was handed a sleeve of SFPE logo imprinted balls, driving range, lunch and door prize tickets. A raffle was held for a special “Hummer” golf cart.

The golf “shot gun” start began at 12:30 and dinner

followed at 6:00 PM. There were 100 golf participants. Following dinner and announcements the teams were invited to select items from the prize table. The dinner and all 18 holes, putting green and driving range were sponsored by generous member and/or affiliated corporate sponsors. Some corporate sponsors and members contributed with prizes as well.

We look forward to an even greater success next year.

    Regards,

    Mickey Milankov, Golf Committee Chair
