Members-at-Large |
Bishoy N. Awad With my current role as an associate consultant at LRI Engineering, I am actively involved in managing and estimating design projects for fire protection and fire alarm systems, allowing me to gain firsthand experience in the practical implementation of fire safety measures. Additionally, my responsibilities encompass witnessing, verifying, and testing various system components, providing me with a comprehensive understanding of the intricate workings of these systems and the challenges involved in ensuring their optimal functioning. I am also responsible of performing the Integrated System Testing as per CAN/ULC S1001 for various jobs in the GTA. My previous role as a Lead Fire Protection Designer at Onyx Fire Protection Services Inc. enriched my expertise in designing diverse fire suppression systems for various structures, fostering a keen understanding of tailoring solutions to meet unique building requirements. I focused on assessing existing building conditions, providing solutions for various warehouses for storage protection and designing retrofitting jobs for various industrial and commercial buildings. Furthermore, my five-year tenure in the Middle East, where I was actively involved in consulting and designing various mechanical building systems, has afforded me a global perspective on fire protection engineering. This international exposure has broadened my understanding of diverse regulatory environments and building practices, making me well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the field. Alongside my field career, I possess a Ph.D. degree in Civil engineering from McMaster University, focused on fluid modelling and developing new numerical codes to enhance computational efficiency. Additionally, I hold a master's degree in civil engineering from The German University in Cairo with the Collaboration of the University of Berlin and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from The German University in Cairo. I am currently an active of the SFPE RTM committee with the Existing Building Task Group working on the Existing Building guide draft. |
Derek Gruchy
Derek has been involved in the fire industry since 2002, and is currently the Program Co-ordinator for the School of Fire Protection Engineering Technology at Seneca College. Derek is a Certified Engineering Technologist with experience in human behaviour during fire emergencies, life safety analysis, exposure risk determination, building and fire code interpretation, and suppression system designs.
