SPEAKER:

G. Abbas Nanji, P. Eng.
Senior Staff Engineer
Underwriters Laboratories of Canada

G. Abbas Nanji is employed with ULC for the past 17 years. He is a Professional Engineer with an undergraduate degree in Civil and a graduate degree in Structural Engineering.

Prior to joining ULC he was employed with Consulting Engineering and Construction Project Management organizations for 23 years. He worked in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, California and Pakistan.

As a Senior Staff Engineer at ULC his work is mostly in the area of Passive Fire Resistance of Structural and Building Systems.

He is a past member of the NBCC Standing Committee for Part 4, Structural Designs for the 2010 and 2015 NBCC code cycle. He is currently a member on the NBCC Part 3 and Part 9 Joint Sub-Committee.

He is also member of various technical organizations including, SFPE, ASCE, NFPA, and ASTM E5.

SYNOPSIS:

Information will be presented about --- how building materials and assemblies are evaluated to ULC Standards for the following:

  1. Non-Combustibility
  2. Flame Spread to include Surface Burning Characteristics, Roof Covering, Flame Retardant Fabrics and Combustible Exterior Wall Cladding.
  3. Fire Resistance of Floor Ceiling Assemblies, Roof Ceiling Assemblies, Columns, Load and Non-Loadbearing Walls. Fire Stop and Joint systems.

The presentation will cover, fire test equipment that is used, how assemblies are constructed and tested, and the relevant listings published in ULC Directories. The presentation will also briefly address the pertinent differences in ULC and ASTM standards.
