Matteo Gilfillan has over 15 years of experience in fire and life safety consulting, working on a variety of projects and occupancies providing building and fire code consulting on building designs and concepts, preparing Alternative Solution Proposals, and conducting building inspections / audits.

Matteo is a graduate from the Fire Protection Engineering Technology program at Seneca College and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree from Bemidji State University in Minnesota.

Matteo is the Past President of the Canadian Fire Safety Association (CFSA) and is an active member in the SFPE, Southern Ontario Chapter and the International Code Council (ICC). He is involved with various fire and life safety committees, including the Technical Advisory Committee that reviewed the recently enacted Code changes regarding retirement homes.

Mr. Gilfillan is a Licensed Engineering Technologist (LET) with Professional Engineers of Ontario and is licensed to practice professional engineering with specific respect to fire and life safety studies and reporting related to Building and Fire Codes and Standards. Matteo is also a NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), and is a Qualified Designer (BCIN).

SYNOPSIS:

On May 17, 2017, the Ontario government filed O.Reg. 139-17 to amend the 2012 Ontario Building Code. The amendments include new design requirements relative to retirement homes, requirements for newly defined “houses”, and requirements to support climate change initiatives.

This presentation is specific to the recent retirement home changes which have come into effect as of July 1, 2017. The presentation reviews the reasoning behind the recent fire and life safety changes to the Ontario Building Code related to retirement homes as well as the impacts and implementation of these new requirements, and provides an overview of critical changes to retirement home design requirements.
