SYNOPSIS:

After familiarizing one’s self to a fire scene, a fire investigator initially starts to observe and analyze the various fire patterns available at the fire site. These patterns tell a story which can be scientifically interpreted. The patterns are governed by the laws of physics and chemistry. As a fire burns, it creates heat that causes the involved and surrounding gases to heat up and expand. As a result these gases become less dense (lighter), and they rise, forming a conical plume. If the rise of the hot combustion gases is impeded by a horizontal surface, they spread out horizontally and flow is controlled by vertical surfaces. These physical laws basically explain how we expect a fire to develop and spread. After a fire has been extinguished, certain patterns are left on combustible and non-combustible materials. These patterns are created as the fire burns and can explain how the fire developed and grew.

Bob will take us through many examples of fire patterns created at actual fire scenes to give us a general introduction to the science of fire pattern analysis leading to the determination of the origin of fires.
