Andrew Wong has over 42 years of full-time professional fire service experience. He has spent 21 years with the City of Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service as a Fire Prevention Inspector, Caption-in-charge of Fire Prevention and retiring in the position of Executive Officer.
Andrew has taught Fire Safety extensively at Seneca College, University of Cincinnati and City University of Hong Kong. He is a frequent instructor for The Institution of Fire Engineers and a number of professional organizations locally and abroad.
Among other credentials, Andrew is a Lifetime Companion Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers. He is also the Founding President of the Institution of Fire Engineers (Canada Branch) since 1991.
Andrew is President of Insight Fire-Life Consultants Inc., a fully insured fire and life safety consulting company that offers a wide range of Fire Code consulting and training services in Ontario and internationally.
During his fire engineering career, Andrew has prepared, reviewed and approved over 500 Fire Safety Plans in Ontario and internationally.
The requirements for building owners or business owners to prepare a fire safety plan for their particular building or premises first appeared 36 years ago in Ontario in 1980 with the introduction of the Ontario Fire Code. The first fire safety planning guideline was introduced in 1983 by the Office of the Fire Marshal. With the advent of technology and the internet, many so-called fire safety planning templates appeared on the world-wide web. Some local fire departments chose to offer a service in assisting the public to comply with the Fire Code by completing a fill-in-the-blank type fire safety plan for a fee. Some business entrepreneurs have created computer software that claimed to be able to automatically generate a fire safety plan for the users with a few key stokes.
The instructor Andrew Wong attempts to bring home the underlying reasons for having a fire safety plan in the first place, and to share with participants the best practice and proven strategies towards preparing a site-specific fire safety plan for any occupancy.
