The Southern Ontario Chapter (SOC) of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers is based in Toronto and has members from throughout the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. Our chapter welcomes members of SFPE International as well as anyone involved in the fire protection industry who would like to participate in chapter activities and events. The chapter holds lunch meetings every second Tuesday, of each month, from September to May where a guest speaker makes a one hour presentation on a topic of interest to the fire protection community. Our lunch meetings are typically at the Toronto Board of Trade Downtown location.

The Southern Ontario Chapter is very involved in promoting fire protection engineering and the mandate of SFPE International, whose goal is "Advancing the Science and Practice of Fire Protection Engineering Internationally". SFPE International and our chapter support the growing field of fire protection engineering.

Our monthly lunch meetings provide an opportunity for the attendees to interact with different people from various sectors of the fire protection industry and to become aware of the latest developments in fire protection. We also are interested in raising the awareness of the fire protection industry within our society and to attract young people to the industry.

Our chapter initiatives include the broadcasting of information relating to fire advances in protection technology, through our meetings, and providing a setting for making new contacts within the industry. Another initiative is to provide charitable donations to worthwhile causes such as Seneca College’s Fire Protection Program and the Children’s Wish Foundation. These donations are funded through our annual charity golf tournament and profits from other events such as lunch meetings.

Our 9th Annual Charity Golf tournament was held on June 1st, 2006 at The Maples of Ballantrae Golf Club where $4,000 was raised for the Children’s Wish Foundation. We had our best turn-out yet for golf and planning is already underway for the 10th Annual Tournament.

The chapter has just completed a successful year of lunch meeting presentations at the Board of Trade, with an attendance of around 36 people per meeting. The executive has put together a wide range of speaker topics for the 2006/2007 program year which began in September 2006. The meeting schedule and speaker topics are available on the chapter website.

In May each year, we have our Chapter’s annual general meeting and executive election. Our new chapter executive member this year is Stanis Yu. Stanis is a Project Handler in the Fire Protection Division of Underwriters’ Laboratories Canada.

Our chapter is able to operate thanks to the volunteers on the Chapter Executive Board and other chapter members and friends. I would like to thank all those who have given of their valuable time to help create a meeting place for fire protection professionals, which not only provides an opportunity to get together with friends and associates but also provides an opportunity to learn what’s new in the fire protection industry.

I would like to welcome all those interested to come out to a meeting or to contact any of the executive listed in the website for more information.

Thank-you

R. Brian Bishop C.E.T.
